50 Cent wins two BET Awards
50 Cent opened the 2003 BET Awards with a performance and ended it as the big winner. 50 took home honors for Best New Artist and Best Male Hip-Hop Artist, tying him with B2K, who won Best Music Group and the Viewers' Choice Award, for the most awards overall. The third annual event, held Tuesday at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, was full of surprises, the biggest being a Michael Jackson appearance and the smallest in the form of actor Tony Cox, who closed the show with a punctuation mark (and a punchout of Tiny Lister). Jackson unexpectedly arrived on stage during Lifetime Achievement Award honoree James Brown's performance and danced for a bit before presenting the Godfather of Soul with the award. Cox, meanwhile, 'rescued' host Mo'Nique with a low blow to Lister, who had been humorously policing the plugs of the presenters all night. Besides 50's set featuring Best Female Hip-Hop Artist winner Missy Elliott and Nate Dogg and the pairing of legends, there were a number of other notable performances, including Snoop Dogg and Pharrell (whose "Beautiful" won Best Collaboration), Beyonce and Jay-Z, Lil' Kim, Ashanti, R. Kelly and last but far from least, DMC and an all-star lineup of DJs -- Grandmaster Flash, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Kid Capri, and DJ Premier -- who paid tribute to the late Jam Master Jay.
