Common launches hat line, stars in 'Aces'
Do you love hats? So does Common. So much so that he launched his own line last Wednesday called Soji. "I love hats, man. I've been wearing them for so long and people always ask me where I get my hats from. So, why not just design something?" Common told MTV. The name comes from a neighbor's name that he liked. No word on if she (or he) gets a cut of the sales. "They're out now in a boutique store in New York, La Coppola Storta," Common told Black Star News. "But they'll be available on the web soon, too. These are high-end quality hats, man. They're handmade in Italy. It's a beautiful thing. I'm really proud of them. It's looking bright." Also on the upside is Common's film career. He made his movie debut Friday in "Smokin' Aces," which partners him with Alicia Keys and stars fellow Chicago-area native Jeremy Piven as the title character. "It felt like everything was divine and that this was the right role for me," Common told the Chicago Tribune. Next up on the big screen is sharing time with Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe in Ridley Scott's "American Gangster." And his first love, music -- or more specifically, hip-hop -- won't be be neglected. Common's follow-up to 2005's highly successful Be, titled Finding Forever, is due to drop in stores in June. Despite being pulled in so many different directions, Common doesn't expect to have a problem keeping a handle on all of it. "I don't think I ever define myself as one thing," he told the Los Angeles Times. "There are so many aspects to me as a person. I'm a writer, I love basketball, I love to read good books, I love traveling. I feel like there are a lot of titles that I fit under. I don't say I'm just a hip-hop guy, but that is part of my culture. But one thing I never want to do is be boxed in."
