Year in review: The year in which “The Iceman” cometh. Former NBA great and future Hall of Famer George Gervin did a 14-game December cameo with the Thunder before calling off his comeback. After losing early leader Kenny Gattison to the NBA, the Thunder were a middling 6-4 when Gervin arrived Dec. 10 and 15-7 when he left just before New Year’s Day. The Iceman’s Thunder career was highlighted by a 43-point performance in a 172-122 Q-C win at Wharton over a Santa Barbara team that starred Gervin’s younger brother, Derrick. ... The Thunder also hosted the All-Star Classic at Wharton that year, with Stars such as John Starks and Anthony Mason on display. ... The season ended with dissension in the ranks and a quick sweep by Saunders’ Catbirds.
